Setting up an aquarium for the first time will take a number of fish tank supplies. Before you can buy fish pet supplies you will need to do some research as to what type of tank, saltwater or fresh water, what size of tank, what type of fish you want in your tank. The research is important so you will know what you are buying and comparative shopping will save you money.

Pet fish aquarium tanks are making a huge come back and a growing fashion trend in the home décor. For that retro look, an idea of setting your tank into an old television console might go with your decorating style or an aquarium on the back of the toilet where the tank use to be could definitely be a conversation piece. No matter what your task aquariums do add that simple touch that every room needs. In the late sixties and seventies aquariums where in many homes in American and live plants were a staple, no there are silk and plastic plants that have taken their place. Pet fish aquarium tanks are made out of acrylic now and glass is not preferred in the home.

The size of the tank matters since it will take less time, money and maintenance to take care or stock a five gallon tank verses a fifty gallon tank. Large fish tanks cost fifty percent more energy to run than a smaller aquarium. Consider the time it will take to clean and maintain a larger tank too. Old water needs to be removed and replaced by new water weekly. Providing the start up items to set up the aquarium will cost more for larger tanks as the size of the filter and heater and décor will be twice as much.

Acrylic tanks are mostly preferred by fish keepers. They are light weight and easy to move unlike their glass counterparts that are heavy and must be placed on a surface that can hold the weight. Acrylic is a manmade material that is molecularly welded which makes it stronger on the seams and virtually leak proof. Very large aquarium tanks to two gallon tanks are available in this material. The shape and design possibilities are much different and more choices are available with acrylic as it is easier to form.

Buy fish pet supplies at a retable pet store or breeder. Let your tank cycle from two to four weeks after setting it up. During the cycling period add some tropical fish food to the water in same amounts to help the cycling process. This helps condition and stabilizes the water. If your ammonia and nitrite levels in the water reach zero then you will be able to starting adding your fish gradually, a few at a time. It is hard to resist the urge to buy all the fish at once however until you know for sure that your water is appropriate for the fish just add them gradually.
